STEPTEXT DANCE PROJECT

1001 Lights

/ 1001 LIGHTS - MOUVEMENT PERPÉTUEL /

steptext dance project developed a complete and varied programme of activities in relation to the 1001 Lights installation, first in April 28-May 9, 2021, and then again June 15-26, 2021, which it called “life-affirming” in its promotional materials. The physical exhibition, held at Bremen’s Schwankehalle, was accompanied by the digital 1001 Lights Mediathek on its home webpage, alongside diverse artistic contributions by actors Michael Meyer and Peter Lüchinger (Bremer Shakespeare company), actress Kathrin Steinweg, dancer Einav Kringel, the Kulturladen Huchting, the dance group Noopur, filmmaker Marie-Claire Schmarsow and Virginie Kamche from the Afrika Netzwerk Bremen, all took part in different activities.

Various online descriptions, created by steptext, indicate that, “in a broader cultural context, the act of lighting candles becomes a unifying act and sets a sign for the global cultural interconnectedness of people. Against exclusion, racism and anti-Semitism, lights ignite to provide brightness, warmth and security. The film installation and the digital supporting programme thus oppose the light to social fragmentation and emphasise the ritual lighting of the flame as a powerful symbol of reflection and renewal that can be found worldwide”.

the film “My (candle) light for...” by documentary filmmaker Marie-Claire Schmarsow, in

collaboration with Virginie Kamche from the Afrika Netzwerk Bremen, deals with the topic of

ritual lighting. In it, they trace different meanings of lighting light in the cultures of the city and

ask: What would you light a candle for?

The film was shown in the framework of the exhibition of 1001 Lights by Mouvement Perpétuel

from 28.04. to 9.05.21 in the Schwankhalle Bremen.
